Nazi Punks,
Folk Off

Academic Journal Publication

This project aimed to create a publication that evoked themes presented in Karl Spracklen's academic journal, Nazi Punks Folk Off. The journal discussed the bastardisation of modern folk music, as neo-punk influences streamed in from Northern Europe. As the text regarded two juxtaposed genres, the aim was to design a hybrid publication that synthesises grungy punk with naive folk themes. I utilized a decorative font paired with brutal and heavily edited imagery to create a series of spreads reminiscent of Sex Pistol posters. The colour palette features an off white and neon coral, which marries the harsh red and black imagery used by black-punk artists and the softer tones used to promote folk music. This publication aimed to highlight Spracklen's warning to the reader; that the neo-punk infiltration into niche music industries must be stopped. Photoshop and InDesign were used to create the square booklet.
